Petuna Is World’s First BAP-Certified Multi-Species Hatchery

Petuna Aquaculture Pty. Ltd.’s Atlantic salmon and ocean trout hatchery in East Devonport, Tasmania, has earned Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification, the Global Aquaculture Alliance announced in mid-September.

The company’s Cressy hatchery is the world’s first multi-species hatchery to attain BAP certification.

Also BAP certified are Petuna’s Table Head and Liberty Point Atlantic salmon and ocean trout farm sites on Tasmania’s west coast and the Van Diemen Aquaculture Pty. Ltd. farm site near Rowella, of which Petuna owns a majority share.

“This is another world first for Petuna and again reiterates our commitment to sustainability,” said Mark Porter, CEO of Petuna Aquaculture. “We take great pride in the fish we produce but also take our social and environmental license very seriously. BAP certification across our production cycle assures our customers and the people of Tasmania that Petuna will always strive to deliver the best product possible, in a sustainable manner that meets their expectations on every occasion. It is something that Peter and Una hold dear to their founding philosophy and are, to this day, rightfully proud of.”

Petuna is Tasmania’s largest multi-species seafood provider, rearing Atlantic salmon and ocean trout in Macquarie Harbour. The company produces whole fish, fillets and hot- and cold-smoked fish products. It markets its products domestically and in Asia, the United States and the United Arab Emirates. The company’s head office, processing facility and distribution facility are located in East Devonport, Tasmania.

The company was founded in 1949 by husband-and-wife team Peter and Una Rockliff, who expanded into aquaculture in 1990 after years in commercial fishing. In 2010, Sealord Group Ltd. acquired a 50% interest of Petuna.
