GAA Recognizes Two Chinese Companies at Zhanjiang Expo

The Global Aquaculture Alliance has presented Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products Co. Ltd. and Allied Pacific Group with its “Commitment to Excellence” award.

george-giving-award-to-guolian-president-li-zhongThe two Chinese companies were recognized for their commitment to the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party certification program.

To qualify, a company’s first facility must be certified for at least seven consecutive years, it must offer a minimum of three-star product, and it must demonstrate a dedication to the ecosystems and communities in which it operates above and beyond the requirements of the BAP standards.

GAA President George Chamberlain presented the awards to Guolian President Li Zhong and to representatives of Allied Pacific at the China International Aquatic Products Exposition in Zhanjiang. Click here to read an article on Guolian. GAA co-hosted and exhibited at the inaugural expo, which drew about 300 exhibitors from around the world, from June 18 to 20.

giving-award-to-allied-pacific2The expo ran concurrently with the 6th International Shrimp Industry Development Forum, organized by the China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Alliance (CAPPMA). At the conference, GAA signed a memorandum of understanding with CAPPMA, in which the two organizations will work collaboratively to advance responsible aquaculture in China and globally. Also at the conference, GAA President George Chamberlain gave a presentation on early mortality syndrome (EMS). In March, GAA launched a case study to act as a foundation for recommendations to the aquaculture community for better shrimp-farming practices. The crux of the case study is a comprehensive survey of shrimp farms in Asia and Latin America. The survey is now available online, in eight languages. The survey results will be revealed at GAA’s GOAL 2014 conference in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from Oct. 7 to 10.

Along with GAA, CAPPMA and China’s Fisheries Advance magazine co-hosted the expo. Chamberlain was featured on the cover of the latest edition of Fisheries Advance, after giving an interview on EMS.
