A feeding demonstration in Costa Rica evaluated the partial replacement of fishmeal in diets for spotted rose snappers with soy protein concentrate (SPC). It found no significant difference between the performance of fish fed an SPC-based diet and those that received commercial fishmeal-based diets. 

Fishmeal sparing in aquafeed is often limited by the presence of anti-nutritional factors found in plant-derived feedstuffs. Fermentation may be a cost-effective means of addressing such factors and improving utilization of plant ingredients in feed. 

Fish is the world’s most traded protein – and a healthy choice that will help feed the world’s growing population into the future. Aquaculture represents the most efficient method by which to convert feed to edible protein, and its use of marine ingredients is being addressed. 

Although its overall production is rising, aquaculture is using less fishmeal and fish oil in feed formulations, and increasing amounts of this fishmeal and oil come from byproducts of fish processing. 

A series of experiments showed that fishmeal is not an essential ingredient in hybrid tilapia feeds and that plant protein-based diets can yield results similar to those obtained with diets containing 10 percent fishmeal. 

The authors have achieved good growth using a fishmeal-free diet for the carnivorous marine fish Florida pompano. In studies, they used pompano as a model marine species in a cost/benefit analysis of two extruded diets. 

With the market volatility of fishmeal, as well as rising sustainability concerns, the aquaculture industry is seeking sources of protein, such as animal byproduct concentrates, to substitute for fishmeal. 

Scientists have been working to understand cobia’s nutritional requirements and advance the economic and environmental sustainability of feeding carnivorous fish using fishmeal alternatives. 

Chlorella and other species have potential as protein sources in aquafeeds. In trials with tilapia fry raised in a recirculating system, the fish received a fishmeal-based control diet or feeds with portions of the fishmeal replaced by Chlorella. 

A study evaluated the potential of pink salmon testes meal, a fisheries byproduct, as a feed ingredient to replace fishmeal in diets fed to juvenile Pacific threadfin. Results showed the salmon testes meal contained high levels of protein, taurine and arginine. 

Tons of aquaculture byproducts are available as sources for fishmeal and fish oil to supplement the supplies obtained from fisheries. Innovative technologies are supporting more efficient use of these by-products in aquafeed. 

Authors evaluated how limiting dietary essential amino acids and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids would affect the growth performance of white shrimp raised in a zero-water-exchange biofloc system. The shrimp were fed diets with varied levels of fishmeal and fish oil and supplemented with soy products. 

Nutrition research run in conjunction with the breeding program ensures that cost-effective feeds are optimized for shrimp performance for a five-year project undertaken in Brunei Darussalam to develop advanced technology for production of large black tiger shrimp. 

Traditionally accepted calculations of wild fish use in feed for major farmed species tend to misrepresent fishmeal use. Some more current calculation methods require separate calculations for fishmeal and fish oil, or focus on quantity of protein from wild-caught fish. 

After a decade of research, Korea has produced individual glass eels for Japanese eel aquaculture. Despite dependence upon the wild seed, Japanese eel aquaculture production has been growing significantly and comprises over 27 percent of Korea’s freshwater aquaculture.
