New Global Shrimp Forum report shows how full utilization can turn shrimp byproducts into value while boosting sustainability and efficiency

A new report explores how the global shrimp industry can eliminate waste by transforming processing byproducts into valuable products.

A new report, 100% Shrimp: Full Utilisation, explores the various ways the global shrimp industry can eliminate waste by converting processing byproducts into high-value inputs for feeds, nutraceuticals and other downstream applications.

Funded by the Global Shrimp Forum and written by Melanie Siggs, a Forum collaborator and director of strategic initiatives at the Global Seafood Alliance, the report combines academic research with real-world market insights and technical expertise from across the shrimp value chain. Contributions from Norwegian data company Kontali and a panel of expert advisors further strengthen the analysis, which is designed to drive efficiency, sustainability and long-term value creation across the industry.

“There is untapped potential in the value of this residual material, which is often seen as waste and a burden to the business,” Siggs said, adding that the project reflects growing interest in maximizing the value of shrimp processing. “This report brings together technical knowledge, market perspectives and real-world examples to show how full utilization can benefit processors, producers and the wider industry – and other sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals and packaging.”

The report, financed through the financial surplus generated by the 2024 Global Shrimp Forum, is intended to be inspirational and drive further research, collaboration and investment.
