Improvement initiatives for pangasius, shrimp and tilapia are among the Dutch sustainable trade organization’s priorities. 

A feeding trial incorporated corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as an energy and protein source in starter and grower diets for pangasius. Results showed excellent fish growth performance, and no negative effects on mortality, fillet yield or fillet color.

Trials show that supplementation with amino acids could reduce protein levels from a typical 28 percent to 23 percent in pangasius diets. 

As examined in various studies, potassium diformate can improve the growth and health status of pangasius when the dietary acidifier is included in feed. 

Phytogenics comprise a class of plant-derived feed additives that improve animal performance. They have been shown to exert multiple positive effects in fish and shrimp, including improvement of feeding efficiency and digestion, reduction of nitrogen excretion and improvement of gut flora and health. 

Many consumers look for an eco-label or rely on a trusted retailer or restaurant to identify sustainable seafood. Certification programs convey this assurance by providing consistent information about the origins, food safety and environmental credentials of seafood. 

In a laboratory trial, juvenile pangasius given a diet with 0.2 percent potassium diformate (KDF) had better weight gain, feed conversion and survival than fish that did not receive KDF. 

Fish supply is a food security priority in Bangladesh. There is potential for the culture of non-native fish species to meet its growing population's needs.
