Early Mortality Syndrome has devastated farmed shrimp in Asia and Latin America. With better understanding of the pathogen and the development and improvement of novel strategies, shrimp farmers are now able to better manage the disease. 

Peter Bridson, who steered aquaculture research for Seafood Watch and its highly influential marketplace recommendations for six years, now runs his own consultancy, Seagreen Research. He discusses global food security, certification standards and gradually changing perceptions about farmed salmon. 

An R&D trial was conducted with shrimp biofloc technology at a commercial facility in Saudi Arabia. Results indicated that biofloc technology can be effectively applied, with some protocol adjustments, in the KSA’s extreme desert environmental conditions.

This study evaluated the susceptibility to IHHNV in three different shrimp batches by measuring infectivity titers. Each batch showed a different infectivity titer, therefore, each batch had a specific susceptibility to IHHNV. 

A novel blend of organic acids (OAB) microencapsulated in a lipid matrix and supplemented in the diets of Litopenaeus vannamei enhanced their growth, phosphorus utilization, resistance to Vibrio harveyi and immunity. This may have implications as an eco-friendly prophylactic strategy.

Silencing genes in white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) with critical roles in replication could provide a strong antiviral effect and thus reduce shrimp mortality. The GOAL 2015 Shrimp Production Survey showed that global farmed shrimp production is rebounding from the decrease seen from 2011 to 2013 due to diseases, and is headed to an all-time high of around 4.8 million metric tons in 2017, barring any new crises.
