Un estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar niveles seguros de amoníaco y nitrito a diferentes etapas de vida del langostino del Río Amazonas, basándose en la hipótesis de que las primeras etapas de desarrollo de M. amazonicum son más sensibles al amoníaco y al nitrito que las etapas posteriores. El monitoreo de esta variable es importante para evitar pérdidas, principalmente en larvicultura y recirculación.
