Trang Corporation adopts humane stunning at harvest in response to rising animal welfare expectations

Trang Corporation and Dary Foods Co. have joined the Humane Slaughter Initiative led by the Shrimp Welfare Project, a program aimed at introducing better animal welfare harvest practices in shrimp farming.
Under the agreement, Trang Corporation said it will electrically stun about 1,800 metric tons of shrimp each year using equipment provided through the initiative. Trangs Group, a U.K.-based seafood supplier, also joined the partnership and said it will prioritize purchasing stunned shrimp from Trang Corporation.
“At Trangs Group, we believe that responsible sourcing starts with animal welfare,” said David Ho, Trangs Group’s global sales director. “By joining this initiative, we ensure the prawns we supply meet the highest ethical standards, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and animal wellbeing.”
The Humane Slaughter Initiative works with shrimp producers and buyers by providing equipment, training, and technical support to companies adopting humane slaughter methods. According to the Shrimp Welfare Project, the memorandum of understanding marks the initiative’s 25th corporate partnership and its ninth in Vietnam.
The partnership comes as retailers and buyers place greater emphasis on shrimp welfare. As of January 2026, the Shrimp Welfare Project said 11 major retailers across the United Kingdom and Europe have published policies committing to humane slaughter and the elimination of eyestalk ablation in their shrimp supply chains.
“As more retailers commit to higher welfare standards, we are seeing a real shift in how shrimps are farmed and harvested,” said Krzysztof Wojtas, Shrimp Welfare Project’s chief programs officer. “With partners like Trang Corporation and Trangs Group embracing humane slaughter, Shrimp Welfare Project is proud to help the industry transition to more responsible aquaculture practices.”
