American Unagi, the United States’ first commercial eel aquaculture company, is now operating in a brand-new land-based recirculating aquaculture system in Waldoboro, Maine.

Construction of the facility was completed in January, company founder and CEO Sara Rademaker told the Advocate.

The state-of-the-art 27,000-square-foot facility will expand American Unagi’s production of American eel (Anguilla rostrata) to more than 500,000 pounds annually.

“Globally eel production has had a reputation of uncertainty so bringing to market an accountable eel with responsible sourcing and farming practices has been a big part of our mission the last eight years,” said company founder and CEO Sara Rademaker.

The new farm incorporates both the growing and the processing operations under one roof, allowing the company to produce high-quality raw and smoked eel products that are sourced and raised responsibly.
