Aquafarmers should monitor and manage various water quality parameters to ensure they remain within acceptable limits for the species being cultured. 

Adequate water quality for fish and shrimp farming is essential for controlling feeding rates, phytoplankton density and several other key parameters. 

Under pressure for environmental impacts during its expansion in the 1990s, shrimp producers and marketplace representatives formed the Global Aquaculture Alliance to hold their industry to higher standards. 

With farmed shrimp production having largely shifted overseas, RAS technologies offer potential solutions for growing production in the United States. The industry is poised for growth, thanks to entrepreneurs who believe in its potential. 

University of Stirling Ph.D. student Simão Zacarias, who is from is Beira, Mozambique, will soon travel to Isla del Tigre, Honduras, to document evidence showing the benefits of breeding shrimp without eyestalk ablation. His is a journey of hopeful discovery. 

In recent years, most of Brazil’s farmed shrimp production has been absorbed by the domestic market. The country’s aquaculture industry shifted focus from exporting frozen shrimp as a commodity in 2004 toward a growing internal demand for fresh and value-added shrimp. 

Shrimp do not produce antibodies and therefore do not remember prior exposure to pathogens, a critical component of long-term protective immunity.
